Sao Paulo, February 19. The ‘blocos’, as the street troops of the Brazilian carnival are called, defied this Sunday the heavy rains which fell on the city of Sao Paulo, the large metropolis which concentrates the greatest number of this type of group.

Since Saturday the rain has not stopped in various parts of the country’s largest city, even with hail, but even so the “blocos” took to the streets this Sunday to march with comparsas and chants which they had been preparing for months. .

The ‘bloco’ Saia de Chita (skirt of Chita) was one of them and toured the Pompeia district this Sunday with people in fancy dress, covered in capes or using umbrellas to protect themselves from the rain that did not stop during the street parade.

La Saia de Chita comparsa had a political connotation in favor of the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the songs celebrated that “the bearded man was elected once again”, alluding to the victory of the president in the elections of october.

Another of the hundreds of “blocos” which criss-crossed the streets of Sao Paulo this Sunday, the QuilomboLab, commissioned by rapper Emicida and which “venerates” the “African ancestors” of Brazilian music.

The largest city in the country leads the number of “blocos” with 663, which exceeds the 644 in 2020, before the suspension due to the pandemic, in a closed dispute with Rio de Janeiro, which this year registered 613 comparsas, against 543 three years ago. years.

The rains in the state of Sao Paulo caused this Sunday the suspension of the carnival program in several coastal cities due to flooding, such as in Sao Sebastiao and Ubatuba, where a seven-year-old girl died in a landslide.

Brazil’s carnival started last Friday and will continue until noon on Ash Wednesday after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. EFE
