Transit point is the only one on the border with the Palestinian enclave controlled by Egypt; deal for arrival of supplies was struck after the US and Israel agreed on the entry of “water, food and medicine for civilians” into the region
The Rafah border crossing, the only transit point to the Gaza Strip not controlled by Israel, will be opened on Friday to allow the passage of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian territory, which was bombed by Israel 13 days ago, a media outlet close to the Egyptian intelligence services announced on Thursday.
Citing “sources”, the AlQahera News channel said that “Rafah will open tomorrow”, Friday, without giving further details. On Wednesday night, US President Joe Biden said he had obtained a commitment from his Egyptian counterpart to allow “up to 20 trucks” to cross the Rafah crossing.
The number is considered insufficient by the United Nations (UN). The commissioner of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) told the BBC that before the war, 500 trucks a day entered Gaza with aid, fuel and other necessities.
