Pope Francis will beatify the Peruvian nun María Agustina Rivas López, murdered in 1990 by the Maoist guerrilla Shining Path, the Vatican announced this Saturday.
The Argentine pontiff recognizes “martyrdom” from Maria Agustina Rivas Lopez, known as “Aguchita”, a member of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd, indicates a statement from the Holy See.
Born Antonia Luzmila in Coracora In 1920, the nun was murdered in Florida, in the north of Peru on September 27, 1990.
She was committed to defending the Ashaninka Amazon tribe, decimated in the early 20th century by the exploitation of rubber and the destruction of its forest, as well as disease and slavery.
The Peruvian nun devoted particular efforts to educating the young women of this tribe, according to the Vatican News agency.
The date of her beatification was not specified.
