ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani security forces attacked a militant hideout near the Afghan border on Wednesday, killing eight insurgents and two children in the ensuing firefight and wounding two soldiers, the Pakistani military said.
It is currently unknown who fired the shots that killed the children during the operation in South Waziristan, a district of the northwestern province of Khaiber Pastunjuá.
In a statement, the armed forces did not identify the extremist group to which the slain rebels belonged.
South Waziristan served as a base for the Pakistani Taliban and other extremists until a few years ago when the military claimed to have driven insurgents out of the region. But there have been attacks from time to time.
The Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, is a separate insurgent group from the Afghan Taliban, although Pakistani extremist groups are often linked to those across the border in Afghanistan.
