The Prime Minister has stated that the government has decided to strengthen the protection of the southern borders and protect the security of Hungarians living in this area. He added that the establishment of a special unit of border guards will serve this purpose – reports MTI news agency.

“We will set up border guard units to work with the police to ensure your security,” Viktor Orbán said on Facebook on Friday. In the first phase, a total of 2,200 border guards will be trained and deployed to protect the borders. The force will later be increased to 4,000 men, Orbán said, adding that he signed a decree to that effect the same day. He said the cabinet held a 10-hour meeting Thursday, necessitated by the war in Ukraine that threatens not only Hungary’s economy but also its security.

The Cabinet concluded that food shortages were occurring in several African countries. “As a result of the food crisis, we expect that migratory pressure on Hungary’s southern borders will increase and that several hundred thousand illegal migrants will come to Hungary and Europe in the coming weeks and months,” Orbán said, referring to “a recent increase in the number of illegal immigrants”. “They are becoming more and more violent,” he said, noting that one person was killed in clashes on the Serbian side of the border.
