Air traffic has been suspended at Munich Airport until 06.00 local time (04.00 GMT) on Sunday due to heavy snowfall, which has also affected rail transport in southern Germany.

Due to the continuing heavy snowfall, there will probably be no air traffic until 06.00 tomorrow, December 3,” the Bavarian capital’s airport reports on its website.

It adds that “passengers are strongly advised not to go to the airport today and to check the status of their flight with their airline before going to the airport tomorrow.”

It was initially reported that air traffic was expected to be suspended until noon today (10.00 GMT).

By that time, around 320 of the 760 flights scheduled for today had already been cancelled, after some 160 operations had already had to be cancelled last night.

Meanwhile, the German railroad company Deutsche Bahn (DB) reported that due to the “onset of winter in southern Germany there will be restrictions on rail transport on December 2 and 3”.

In a statement, DB recommends customers to postpone their travel, if possible for a date from Monday onwards, as the booking on trains scheduled to run on Sunday is already very high.

Public transport has also stopped running in Munich because the snowplows are unable to remove the fresh snow.

The heavy snowfall has also forced the postponement of the Bundesliga match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin that was due to take place at 15.30 local time (13.30 GMT) at the Allianz Arena, the Bavarian club said in a statement.
