The Foreign Minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, announced this Wednesday that the country had received 12 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine that are in the final packaging process to begin distribution for Mexico and the countries of Latin America.
“Today we are going to receive eight million additional doses, so we will have a total of 18 million doses in the Liomont laboratory; They are in the final process to start distribution in Mexico and Latin America, for countries that have contracts or orders, from the third week of April, once all the procedures have been completed,” Ebrard announced this Wednesday from the National Palace.
Ebrard said that Mexico and Argentina had promoted access to vaccines in the region and continued saying: “We have proposed this with other vaccines and companies, but so far, in Mexico, we are also producing CanSino, and they are willing and have contracts with America Latin”.
On Monday, Mexico announced that the first batch of Chinese CanSino Biologics vaccine – 940,022 doses – was produced and packaged in the country.
Ebrard said that the country is very close to beginning to distribute the AstraZeneca vaccine in Latin America and said that “this would be a great step for Latin America and the Caribbean; we can act together, we can solve these important challenges and we can ensure that our people have access to what they are entitled to.”
The director of the Pan American Health Organization, Carissa Etienne, said Tuesday that 33 of the 35 member states had begun immunizations and that 21 countries in the Americas will receive their first vaccine deployment by the end of this week.
