The challenge to clonazepam is holding several countries in suspense in which poisonings of minors have already been reported.

Despite the concern this has caused, the Under-Secretary of Health, Hugo Lopez-Gatellsaid that “this type of behavior in youth groups is not new”, however, he claimed that digital platforms have encouraged the issue to become of public interest and concern.

It is in this context that the epidemiologist underlined that “the clonazepam challenge” would have revealed a possible violation of the general health law of those who supply said drugs to young people. This, added to the assumption that the drug was available through a relative or close person for whom it was prescribed.

The “Clonazepam Challenge” involves ingesting said drug in high doses to compete and see how long participants stay awake. The consequences of its misuse, in accordance with the Health Secretary (SSa), range from respiratory problems, from deep drowsiness to coma, addiction and even death if combined with alcohol or other drugs that cause drowsiness.

According to the federal agency, there was 45 cases of poisoning due to ingestion of clonazepam in 18 states of the Mexican Republic. And although in previous weeks schools have transcended the places of occurrence, López-Gatell assured that the cases have been reported mainly in homes.

“Although it has been reported around schools, the reality in schools has been five or six cases. Most of them happen in homes outside of school hours,” he has since claimed. The morning of this February 14.
