DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Daniil Medvedev won his Qatar Open debut by beating Britain’s Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday in a clash of former world number ones.

Medvedev converted several quick breaks in each set. He led 4-1 in the first and 3-1 in the second.

Murray fought back, but the gap was too big and Medvedev won his 17th singles title.

“Sometimes we played really badly and suddenly we both started playing amazing,” Medvedev admitted. “I’m happy to win.”

Medvedev won the Rotterdam tournament last week and extended his winning streak to nine games.

After playing a record five finals in Doha, Murray said: “It was fantastic to be back in a final here and against an incredible player. Daniil is one of my favorite players to watch and one of the best tennis players on tour. It’s amazing for me to have the opportunity to play against someone of his level in a final.”
