LONDON (AP) — Propelled by goals from Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland, Manchester City snatched top spot in the Premier League by beating Arsenal 3-1 on Wednesday.

Grealish and Haaland scored in the second half as the defending champions confirmed their recent dominance over Arsenal and sent the message that they were not going to hand over the throne so easily.

Victory at the Emirates Stadium left City top of the table thanks to a better goal difference over Arsenal, although the Gunners have a game to play.

More importantly, the team managed by Pep Guardiola maintain their supremacy over Arsenal, epitomized by 11 consecutive league victories.

In the game that lived up to expectations as the most important of the Premier League season, City struck first when Kevin de Bruyne capitalized on a defensive error in the 24th minute. But Bukayo Saya equalized for Arsenal by taking a penalty in the 42nd.

City regained the lead in the 72nd minute after a miss from Gabriel, who lost the ball in his own half. In a blistering counterattack, Ilkay Gundogan set up Grealish and the midfielder beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with a low shot.

Haaland was able to play after receiving a knock in the game against Aston Villa and established himself as the tournament’s top scorer – now with 26 goals – after receiving an assist from De Bruyne, who was sentenced to 82.

The match was due to be played in October, but was postponed due to schedule changes following the relegation of Queen Elizabeth II.
