Madrid flies in health. The Government of the Community of Madrid has announced a new contract for the service of medical helicopters in the region for an amount of 21.7 million euros, according to the Administration led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso in a press release. The helicopters provide emergency assistance through Summa 112. The contract is for a period of sixty months, until 2028, according to the regional government. This service is basically provided with the availability of two medicalized helicopters and their corresponding aeronautical crew, whose activity is carried out from dawn to dusk, with a maximum of 12 hours a day each, every day of the year.

Madrid has two such helicopters based in Las Rozas and Lozoyuela.

The helicopters, whose operational bases are in Las Rozas de Madrid and Lozoyuela, have among their main objectives the transport of medical personnel and their equipment to the place where a medical emergency occurs, the transfer of the injured person to the designated hospital, the programmed transport of patients according to the needs established by Suma 112 or neonatal transport. The aircraft, like the rest of the network resources, are mobilized from the Emergency Coordination Center. These two aircraft performed a total of 1,141 interventions in 2022. In addition to the pilot and the Hems crew member (a professional dedicated to medical emergencies), the medical staff on both helicopters is made up of a doctor, nursing staff and an emergency health technician. They are also equipped with all the electromedical instruments and material required for advanced life support. This health contract is in addition to the one approved last week by the Government of Madrid, which gave the green light to the investment of 10.8 million euros for the purchase of 50,000 doses of vaccine against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which causes different clinical conditions, especially bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
