PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Manny Machado is still a very wealthy man. He is also still a very good hitter.

Machado scored an RBI double on Sunday, the same day he agreed to a new, $350 million, 11-year deal that will keep him with the San Diego Padres through 2033, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Machado must pass a physical test before closing the deal.

Machado was cheered on by Padres fans on a cold afternoon in Arizona before a warm-up game against the Diamondbacks. The third baseman struck out on his first at-bat before hitting a line into the left field fence that turned into a double in the second nine-run inning.

Machado went 2-for-3 at home plate, adding a single in the third inning.

The 30-year-old star had indicated that after this season he was considering opting out of the 10-year, $300 million contract he signed in 2019. With the $120 million he has already raised, the new agreement increases the amount committed by the Padres. with Machado at $470 million over 15 years.

Key in transforming the Padres into World Series championship contenders, Machado finished second in National League MVP voting last year. He is part of an all-star cast that includes Xander Bogaerts, Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr., who will be able to join on April 20 after completing an 80-game suspension for doping.

CAPTAIN JUDGE

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge received several standing ovations from fans at Steinbrenner Park ahead of his first game as team captain.

“I felt it in the intro, on top of being on defense and standing at the plate,” acknowledged the reigning American League MVP.

Judge became a free agent after last season, but ended up signing a nine-year, $360 million contract with the Yankees. He was named the team’s first captain since Hall of Famer Derek Jeter in 2014.

BINOCULARS GET SANTANA

The Minnesota Twins claimed right-hander Dennis Santana off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.

The 26-year-old pitcher played 63 games, including a start, with the Texas Rangers last season, posting a 3-8 record with a 5.22 ERA. To make room for Santana on the 40-man roster, the Twins placed Royce Lewis on the 60-day disabled list. Lewis is recovering from surgery on his right knee.
