MADRID (AP) — Three workers were trapped underground Thursday at a potash mine in northeastern Spain, authorities said.
The three worked at the Cabanasses de Súria mine, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Barcelona. A rescue operation was underway after the collapse occurred shortly before 9 a.m. (0800 GMT), a Catalan regional police officer said.
The event happened at a depth of 900 meters (nearly 3,000 feet), according to what the regional fire department said on Twitter, which said it already had troops at the scene.
The mine was operated by the Iberpotash company and owned by the Tel Aviv-based ICL group.
