Jose Humberto Salazar Contrerasmayor of Jerez, Zacatecas, announced that the Carnival 2013known as There Sherrywas suspended due to the violence experienced in the municipality and due to the resolution of the judge who granted an injunction to an organization that seeks to stop the bullfighting events within the fair.

“Today is a very sad day for our magical city, the situation which has disturbed the peace and tranquility of our people, today it also disturbs our traditions. First and foremost there is integrity of our people and our visitors,” the mayor said in a video he shared on social media.

Without mentioning the violence suffered by the municipality, the mayor added that he had appealed to state and federal forces in the face of the “adversities” that are occurring. “We regret the damage that caused so many victims, we respond to their cry for justice and we join in their concern,” said the municipal president.

The insecurity in the municipality has alerted residents due to the disappearance of a young man and the presence of organized crime that operates in the area and throughout the state.

In the early hours of February 16, a group of armed individuals reportedly attacked and deprived of their freedom a family living in a house on Calle de Colón. Initial reports indicated that the subjects fled the scene after setting fire to the house where a deceased person was found.
