Seoul, April 17. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended a football match in Pyongyang this weekend on the so-called “Day of the Sun”, the most important national holiday that commemorates the anniversary of Kim Il-sung, the country’s founder and grandfather of the current field marshal, reported state news agency KCNA today.

As happened in February with the birthday of Kim Jong-il, his father and predecessor in power, the current leader attended a football match between members of the Cabinet and the Ministry of Defense in the capital North Korean.

As in February, Kim was accompanied by his daughter, believed to be Kim Ju-ae, and his sister Kim Yo-jong.

Also on the podium were two members of the Presidium of the Workers’ Party Central Committee, Kim Tok-hun and Jo Yong-won, as well as other senior regime officials.

On the “Day of the Sun”, Kim avoided visiting the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, the mausoleum where the embalmed remains of his father and grandfather rest in Pyongyang, which he also did on Kim Jong-il’s last birthday.

Some analysts believe that the way Kim Jong-un has decided to celebrate his father’s and grandfather’s birthdays this year seems to be focused on praising his own figure and not so much that of previous leaders, such as it was the tradition.

In turn, the current leader on Sunday inaugurated the construction of 10,000 new houses in Pyongyang’s Hwasong district in a nighttime ceremony accompanied by fireworks, KCNA reported.

The regime has proposed building 10,000 new homes a year in Hwasong, in the north of the North Korean capital, by 2025. EFE
