FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Boston Red Sox infielder Justin Turner was taken to hospital after Monday’s exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers after being hit in the face with a pitch .
The 38-year-old baseball player collapsed after being hit by a pitch from right-hander Matt Manning. Medical personnel rushed to the plate and Turner left the field bloodied and with a towel over his face.
“He is receiving treatment for a soft tissue injury and is being monitored for a possible concussion,” the team said in a statement. “Justin is stable, alert and in good spirits under the circumstances.
The two-time All-Star signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Red Sox last offseason after spending nine years with the Dodgers. He hit .278 with 13 home runs and 81 RBIs in 128 games last season.
