The president of the United States, Joe Bidenarrived in Kyiv on Monday on a surprise visit to meet the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, a few days before the first anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion.

The President of the United States makes a visit outside the official agenda, since he had announced that he would visit Poland but landed in Kyiv.

During the meeting with Zelensky, Biden announced $500 million in additional aid to Ukraine. In addition, he announced that he would decree new sanctions against Russia this week.

Biden is the first trip to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion. The US President and Zelensky met for the first time on December 21 during a historic visit by the Ukrainian leader to Washington, on his first trip abroad since the start of the war.
