STECCATO DI CUTRO, Italy (AP) — The death toll has risen to 62 after migrants capsized off the coast of southern Italy after rescuers found three more bodies on Monday, the latest tragedy stemming from the dangerous boat trips of people trying to reach Europe. Dozens are said to be missing.
Among the dead were children after a wooden boat broke on reefs off the Calabria region in rough seas on Sunday. At least 80 people survived, but it is feared that there were no more deaths given claims by some survivors that the boat was carrying around 170 people. He left Turkey last week.
The beach at Steccato di Cutro, on the Calabrian coast of the Ionian Sea, was littered with the shattered remains of the 65-foot (20-meter) boat, along with some of the migrants’ personal effects, including a pink tennis shoe from a small boy and a yellow pencil case decorated with pandas. There were only a few life jackets scattered among the debris.
