During the work of the Mayan train, in the archaeological area of ​​Palenque, a burial chamber was discovered with two burials, an offering and a niche (INAH)

A burial chamber, consisting of two burials and an offering, was discovered by staff from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in the archaeological area of Palenqueduring the construction works of the Mayan trend.

Amid efforts to save the stretches 6 (Tulum-Bacalar) y item 7 (Chetumal to Escárcega) of the Mayan Train, INAH has intensified its actions to protect all archaeological discoveries that emerged from the excavations and construction works of the railway that will cross different states in the south of the country.

On this occasion, INAH archaeologists discovered a primary burial belonging to the Palenque Archaeological Zone.

It was during the morning conference at the National Palace, Monday, March 20, that Diego Prietohead of INAH, was responsible for sharing the discovery, in which the discovery of a skeleton in the burial chamber, which is in optimal conditions for study.

According to the agency’s report, in the burial chamber A primary burial, a secondary burial, as well as an offering consisting of three plaques and a niche with various green stone figures, which will be studied and preserved, have been located.

The discovery occurred when personnel working on the Maya train were carrying out archaeological rescue in the area called Structure CP3. It should be remembered that the archaeological recovery near the Mayan train route is part of the Archaeological Areas Improvement Program (Promise), which is carried out by the Ministry of Culture of the Federal Government.

As soon as INAH archaeologists became aware of the burial chamber, they began study and preservation work.

According to the head of INAH, the skeleton was found inside the primary burial and was face up facing north. This funeral position was common among the customs of the people who inhabited Palenque.

on others Bony remains located in the secondary deposit, specialists determined that it was a Womenwhich was probably buried in a different place of the chamber, that is, in case of moving and opening the chamber, the bones of the woman were rearranged in the access space or antechamber to the main character.

In addition, another discovery was that of a skull who belongs to secondary burialwhose analyzes for its identification are continuing.

Diego Prieto clarified that the archaeological recovery tasks are practically complete; however, analysis and interpretation of archaeological information will continue.

Regarding the update of information for the Museum of Palenque, there is an advance of 30%, the new signage for the archaeological area is also in preparation, as well as for the infrastructures so that traders and artisans can sell their products at the audience.

Moreover, according to the owner of the INAHwork is underway on the rehabilitation of the footbridges in different sectors of the archaeological site, including those of the new area which will be open to the public, called Group IV.

Since the beginning of the construction of the Mayan train, the archaeologists of the INAH have undertaken work to preserve the pre-Hispanic ruins, as well as all the discoveries that have arisen with the works of the sections of the Mayan train.

Until the news break on March 20, 2023, the INAH has recovered 2 thousand 655 properties (foundation, albarradas and pedestals), 218 movable assets —such as ceramics, metals, domestic instruments and figurines—, 255,000 683 potsherds which is being analyzed, as well as 177 human burials and 38 natural features associated with the landscape.
