Pinocchio is the last feature film by Guillermo del Toro, who has directed other films such as Chronos (1992), Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) y The shape of water (2017). Besides being his first animated filmit is also the “most personal”, in the words of the Mexican filmmaker.

As its name suggests, it is based on the classic Italian tale of Charles Collodi. To give a more innocent tone to Pinocchiodel Toro was based on the work of artist and writer Ominously Graywho in 2003 published an illustrated version of the story.

This movie took over 15 years to see the light and screened in cinemas, despite the fact that its budget was 35 million dollars (equivalent to 700 million pesos). “Cucho’s Workshop”located in Guadalajara, was in charge of one of the film’s scenes and the making of the set and characters.

According to Guillermo del Toro, this film is dedicated to his motherdied in October 2022. With this project, the Mexican director had a specific objective: that animation in the cinema is not considered only for a child audience and that it is valued as another form of art.
