After the continued success of the film “Pinocchio” (currently nominated for an Oscar), the Mexican director Guillermo del Toro announced that he will lead “The Buried Giant”a new band animation ‘stop motion’.

The news was published via Netflix’s Twitter profile, a platform that once again associates the director with the project based on the fantastic novel namesake of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, the British writer Kazuo Ishigurō.

As for the story on which it will be based, it follows the life of an elderly couple who, after vaguely remembering that they are the parents of a son, decide to go to the nearby town to look for it. The filmmaker confirmed this new project through a statement in the local media.

In addition to directing, del Toro will write the screenplay with Dennis Kelly, also screenwriter for “Utopia” (2013) or “Matilda The Musical” (2022). Note that with “Pinocchio”, Del Toro sought to demonstrate that animation”stop-motion” is one more art form and breaks down the prejudice that limited it to a child audience for many years.

“I would like to thank the British Academy not only for this honor but also for allowing our animated film to enter categories in which they are not normally allowed. I think animation is not a genre for kids, it’s a medium for art, it’s a medium for film and I think animation should stay in the conversation,” Del Toro said in his BAFTA Awards speech.

Guillermo del Toro closed 2022 by being on the list of 500 most influential leaders in the audiovisual world which is published annually by Variety. Since the magazine pointed out that after having one of its biggest disappointments with the box office sales of its film alley of nightmares last year, in 2022, the director recovered thanks to Pinocchio.

Similarly, in November last year, the filmmaker was also awarded the title of honorary doctor by the highest house of studies in the country, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Del Toro was awarded this diploma for his film career.

Another of the screenwriter’s achievements was also honored at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) from New York. In addition, the exhibition was inaugurated on the site Make Pinocchiowhich shows how Guillermo and his team proceeded to achieve the film’s stop-motion.

Guillermo del Toro, along with Mark Gustafson, took about 15 years to create this film, which was made at the Cucho workshop, located in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
