Fear for Medvedev in Indian Wells

The Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedevwho won three titles in a magnificent start to 2023, came back from the match against the German Alexander Zverev and will face the Spaniard in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells Alexander Davidovich.

However, the 27-year-old’s win was marred by an episode that had him as a protagonist and for which he tried to apologize before leaving the court. During the first bars of the confrontation, Medvedev he repeatedly complained about the surface.

“This court is a shame for tennis (…). And they call it a hard court? What a shame to call this horrible court a hard court! shouted the Russian after losing the first set to Alexander Zverev 6-7(5). Despite the fact that he managed to turn things around (6-7(5), 7-6(5) and 7-5 in 3 hours and 17 minutes), the current world number 6 pointed against the organization of the tournament.

At one of the breaks, he told the referee that I would walk to the bathroom as slow as the track itself and he assured that he didn’t care if they sanctioned him for it.

“If they allow us to play on such a pitch, I can afford to do what I want”, defended the tennis player, who continued his peculiar comic “show” by walking shamelessly slowly on the way to the toilet. “It’s not a fast track. I know what a fast lane is. I am a specialist“, he added in another of the breaks.

Finally, after the complaints, the fear of the Russian tennis player after suffer a journey that could have ended in injury. Game six of the second set was playing out when he sprained his ankle and collapsed to the ground much to the chagrin of everyone in the room.

Tournament medical services worked on an ankle which appeared to be swollen and, thankfully, Medvedev was able to return to Indian Wells center court to sign a great comeback against a very unfortunate Zverev to close the ‘break’ (he only converted 2 of the 17 balls he had to break his rival’s serve).

Note that once his victory was consumed, he returned to his performance and his anger: “There are guys like Cam Norrie, I don’t know if Alcaraz likes to play here, but Norrie definitely likes to play here, what would- he ? say, why are we changing the tracks?, and he is right. We can’t change them because I don’t like it. Here, speaking calmly, I understand it and I don’t like my behavior on the track. I actually think it distracts me and it would be better to shut up and play. That’s what I have to do. But at the same time, that’s who I am.”

Seeded fifth in Indian Wells and the only one capable of beating Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic so far this year, Medvedev hasn’t lost a match in 2023 since losing in the third round of the European Open. ‘Australia. SO, Medvedev has consecutively won the tournaments in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai.

In the neighborhoods of Indian Wells will face Davidovitch, who beat the Chilean Cristian Garín 6-3 and 6-4 in an hour and 24 minutes this Tuesday in the round of 16.
