A bus with migrants on board crashed at the border between Panama and Costa Rica, four Colombians lost their lives.

On the afternoon of February 27, 2023, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs updated the information on the victims of the accident of Panamahappened on February 15, the total number of Colombians affected by the accident is six people, a woman and a minor who are out of danger, while the death toll stands at four.

The victims correspond to four elderly people, the Consulate of Colombiahave already established communication with their relatives, it was also notified that assistance has been provided to two of the families, who have already moved to the town of David, in the province of Chiriquí.

The identification of the bodies was the result of joint efforts between: the Consulate of Colombia in Panama City, the National Registry of Civil Status and the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Panama. That he would have been in charge of the process of identifying the three Colombians, pending recognition.

On February 17, two days after the accident, the authorities of the neighboring country confirmed the death of a Colombian, in this regard the Ministry of Foreign Relations expressed himself:

“We regret to inform you that forensic medicine has just confirmed the death of one of the compatriots injured in the accident in Panama. His family has already been notified and is receiving the necessary help and advice.”

The accident killed 68 people, including 66 immigrants of various nationalities, among which: Ecuadorians, Bolivians, Brazilians and Cubans, these people were destined for the border between Mexico and the United States. The accident occurred near Los Planes de Gualaca, province of Chiriquí.

The Colombian authorities also explained the difficulties encountered in identifying the victims of the bus accident, since a large part of the identity documents were lost during the accident and the condition of the bodies would make the situation difficult.

“It is important to clarify that the identification work was complex as most of the bodies were affected and many personal effects and identification documents were lost, so it was difficult to determine the identity of the victims and their nationalities”, informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia.

Stopping on February 17, the Panamanian authorities reported that: “among the survivors there are 8 people who are unconscious and without papers, which is why it has not yet been possible to determine their Nationality”.

One of Colombian passengers survivors was a 35-year-old woman, identified as Lady Katherine Garcia. According to the official report, this person was transferred to a health center where he had to undergo surgery, “they had to put screws in his hip, I don’t know if he has two broken legs or one only. (…) We don’t know how many days we have to be there with her, the situation is complicated,” her sister told Snail News.

As soon as she was notified, Lady’s family asked for help from the national government to be able to travel to the neighboring country, “I was at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and there they gave me no information, per se, they did not have a basis to give me information about the accident, so this is the request that we make to the government and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to help us when we are in Panama”, concluded Lady’s sister.
