European title hopes were dashed for Arsenal after the Premier League leaders were knocked out of the Europa League by Sporting Lisbon on penalties on Thursday.

Lisbon reached the quarter-finals by winning the penalty shoot-out 5-2 at the Emirates Stadium after drawing 1-1 in regulation time in the second leg. The first leg ended 2-2.

Gabriel Martinelli failed to score the penalty for Arsenal.

“It’s a blow,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted to BT Sport. “There were times, especially in the first 75 minutes, when we weren’t level and gave away the ball.”

While Manchester United barely screwed up to claim the 1-0 win at Real Betis and advance to the quarter-finals.

Arsenal dominated in extra time after midfielder Martin Ødegaard came on as a substitute, but Sporting goalkeeper Antonio Adán saved them on penalties.

Manuel Ugarte was sent off two minutes from the end of extra time for a second yellow.

Granit Xhaka put Arsenal ahead in the first half. Pedro Gonçalves equalized the score after an hour and forced extra time.

UNITED ADVANCE

In Sevilla, Marcus Rashford finished in style in the 56th minute, slotting the ball into the bottom corner with a low shot from outside the box, and United sealed a 5-1 aggregate triumph in the draw.

It was Rashford’s 27th goal this season. He charged for it after wasting several chances to overtake the English club at the Benito Villamarín stadium in Sevilla.

“Betis are a very good team, we saw that against Real Madrid and Barcelona, but we beat them twice, so I think we put in a good performance,” coach Erik ten Hag told BT Sports.

United won 4-1 in the first leg at Old Trafford last week.

Following the 0-0 draw with Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday, manager Erik ten Hag made four changes to the line-up. Uruguayan right winger Facundo Pellistri has started for the club for the first time.

2017 Europa League champions United resisted the initial siege of Betis by Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini. Spain’s 41-year-old captain Joaquín hit the post with a long shot in the 11th minute.

Sevilla, another Andalusian club, qualified despite losing 1-0 to Turkish side Fenerbahce. The team led by Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli had won 2-0 in the first leg and secured a bye to the quarter-finals by sealing a 2-1 in their favor after both matches.

With a brace from Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus beat Germany’s Freiburg 2-0 away and qualified 3-0 on aggregate.

Mexican striker Santiago Giménez scored the opening goal in Dutch Feyenoord’s 7-1 victory at home to Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk. The series was 8-2.

Bayern Leverkusen beat Ferencváros 2-0. Roma advanced despite drawing 0-0 at Real Sociedad after winning the first leg 2-0.

Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise also qualified for the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over 10-man Union Berlin after a 3-3 draw last week.

EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE

West Ham beat AEK Larnaca of Cyprus 4-0 in London and advanced 6-0 to the quarter-finals of Europe’s Third Division.

Anderlecht cruised to a decisive 1-0 win over Real Sociedad to advance 2-1 on aggregate, while Nice went 4-1 on aggregate against Sheriff after winning 3-1 at home.
