Thousands of victims are feared to be still under the rubble in Turkey, where only 67 have been found in the last 24 hours. In opposition-held areas of northwestern Syria, the White Helmets declared an end to search

The death toll caused by the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria rose to 28,191 on Saturday, while 85,380 people were injured in both countries.

Turkey has so far recorded 24,617 dead. Although rescuers are still working, only 67 people have been found alive in the last 24 hours, including a two-month-old baby, while the number of bodies recovered has been growing.

It is feared that thousands of victims are still under the rubble in Turkey. Among the survivors, the situation is very complicated: one million people have been left homeless in a wide area of the southeast, according to official data.

The count in Syria, meanwhile, has hardly changed from the figure offered Friday by both the regime of Bashar al-Assad and the White Helmets rescue group, which operates in opposition areas in the northwest of the Arab country, where aid is limited.

The death toll here stands at 3,574 and of these 2,166 have been recorded in rebel areas.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 5 million people have been affected across the country by the quake, while more than 300,000 have been left homeless in just two of the stricken provinces.

In opposition-held areas of northwestern Syria, the White Helmets declared Saturday the end of operations to search for survivors, after having found no one alive under the rubble since Thursday.
