“Russia’s aggressive actions violate international law, and Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. They also undermine European security,” Michel said in the letter to the 27 heads of state and government invited to the special summit.

In the announcement, Michel detailed that the agenda of the summit will focus on “the latest developments; how to protect an international order based on laws; how to relate to Russia (…) and how we support Ukraine and the Ukrainians.”

“It is important that we remain united and determined, and that together we define our collective approach and our actions,” said the head of the European Council.

In this way, this special summit will take place after the EU adopted sanctions against Russian officials for the recognition of two breakaway territories of Ukraine as independent republics.

In his invitation to the summit on Thursday, Michel noted that “the use of force and coercion have no place in the 21st century.”
