Macron, who beat the far-right Marine Le Pen in the second round of the elections held this Sunday, has called for Europe to prepare to participate in the negotiation of a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The rules and courtesies of traditional diplomacy remain in force even in times of war. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday congratulated his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, on the occasion of his re-election as President of France, the Kremlin reported.

“I sincerely wish you success in your work as a statesman, as well as good health and well-being ,” Putin said in his congratulations, according to a brief statement issued by the Russian Presidency.

“At some point a ceasefire will have to be prepared , and Europe has to be at the table,” Macron said in an interview with France Inter radio on Friday.
