Sports Writing, Feb. 18 Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen, with a remarkable third card with 64 strokes (eight under par), for an aggregate of 198 (-18), is the new leader of the Thailand Classic, a DP World Tour tournament taking place in Amata Spring. Chon Buri in Bangkok, where the Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello had a very low profile day which, with a 72, relegated him to eighth position.
Rafa Cabrera Bello of the Canary Islands started the day on top, two strokes clear of Paraguay’s Fabrizio Zanotti and three ahead of Olesen. But his golf did not shine like the previous two days, presenting an at par card, with two ‘bogeys’ and two ‘birdies’.
Zanotti didn’t show up either, although his run was better than the Spaniard’s with 70 shots (-2). He paid the first nine holes, where he committed two ‘bogeys’, which he amended in the home straight with an ‘eagle’ (hole 11) and three ‘birdies’, to re-pierce with a ‘bogey’ the 18. Like Rafa Cabrera He shares eighth place, five strokes behind Olesen.
And it is that the Dane made an immaculate third round, with eight ‘birdies’ (including four consecutive, from 9 to 12). That took him to the top of the standings and, one day to go, with a two-shot advantage over compatriot Nicolai Hojgaard and Germany’s Yannik Paul, who featured cards with 64 and 66, respectively.
Olesen, 33 and a career marred by serious extra-sporting issues, is on track to claim what would be his seventh wins at the former European Tour.
Of the rest of the Spaniards, Pablo Larrazabal is thirty-third, 11 shots off the lead, after having presented a 70 this Saturday; Adrián Otaegui, who made the pair, is 12 behind the leader; Alejandrio del Rey at 14, after the 72 on his third card; and Jorge Campillo at 17 with 75 today. EFE
