Cyclone Yaku: 483 districts of the country on red alert due to rains, overflowing rivers and streams

Peru experiences one of the most critical seasons of the year. He Cyclone Yaku brought with him Huaycos, floods, overflows, millions of economic losses and dozens of human lives lost because of this phenomenon. Faced with this, the government decided to issue a Emergency state in 483 districts of the country.

All belong to 18 regions distributed throughout the national territory. This happens after the huaycos and floods in various regions of Peru which, so far, have claimed more than 50 lives and affected thousands of families.

The declaration of Emergency state was given by the executive branch due to the danger posed by the rains and other environmental impacts due to the presence of the Cyclone Yaku.

This measure was formalized by Supreme Decrees No. 034-2023-PCM and No. 035-2023-PCM, published in extraordinary editions.

Regarding Supreme Decree No. 034-2023-PCM, several boroughs in the regions of Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca and Piurawho suffered damage on their territory due to heavy rains.

Regarding SD Nº 035-2023-PCM, the declaration of emergency reaches some provinces in the regions of Áncash, Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Ica, Junín, Lima, Moquegua, Puno and Tacna. To this list is added the Constitutional Province of Callao. Heavy rains pose a threat to these places.

What is the duration of the declaration of emergency? According to the two documents, the deadline is 60 calendar days which will be used for “the execution of the emergency, immediate and necessary measures and actions, of response and rehabilitation that correspond”, reads the autograph.

Cyclone Yaku caused the government and institutions of civil and meteorological defense warn which are the districts of Lima with the greatest risk in the presence of the phenomenon. These are:

– San Juan de Lurigancho

-Villa Maria Del Triunfo.

Cyclone Yaku will not enter the coasts of Peru, as it does in the Caribbean region, because it will remain on the coast. Despite this, its proximity will be felt in various regions, including Lima, where moderate intensity rains will alert us to the presence of the Cyclone Yaku.

From March 12 to 14, the capital will present rains; however, this will vary depending on the location of certain districts.

– Districts of Lima West: These are those that are close to the sea and the rains that they will present will be up to two millimeters. In other words, it would be two liters of accumulated water per square meter.

– Districts of Eastern Lima: these are the furthest from the sea and these would be the most affected, since the rains would be between four and five millimeters thick. That would become four or five liters of empowered water per square meter.

Flat roofs are other features that work against Lima homes. According to what has been mentioned by the Peruvian authorities, many roofs could collapse during the intense rains of Cyclone Yaku. Similarly, on the highway, the water stagnation.
