Chicago (United States), 27 Feb. Colombian Juan David Mosquera gave the Portland Timbers a 1-0 victory Monday at Providence Park against Sporting Kansas City in the match that closed the program of the first day of the American MLS.

Mosquera scored the decisive goal after six minutes, beating the keeper with a right-footed low shot after an assist from Yimmy Chara, who would retire shortly after through injury.

The 20-year-old right-back has been playing at Portland since the summer of 2022 and celebrated his first goal in the Timbers jersey, in which he shares the locker room with compatriots Yimmy and Diego Chara.

In the Timbers, Brazilian Evander Da Silva made his debut, signed for around ten million dollars from Midtjylland.

At Sporting, Spanish defender Andrey Fontás, a former Barcelona or Celta Vigo player, was the starter, who is facing his sixth season in American football.

The match was played on Monday after being postponed on Saturday due to heavy rains that have fallen in recent days on the west coast of the United States.

The following day, the Timbers will face defending champions Los Angeles FC, while Sporting Kansas City will face the Colorado Rapids. EFE
