Concern for caring for the environment continues to grow internationally and the automotive sector in Colombia is not far behind. The transition to sustainable mobility in the world is making great strides, despite the fact that the coronavirus pandemic also affected this sector, since last year sales of general cars decreased 16%, but that of electric vehicles increased 41% with more than three million units sold, according to the International Energy Agency.
This year the vehicle sales market has recovered, since the IEA reported that in the first months of the year the purchase of cars increased 140% compared to the same months of 2020. In Colombia, according to the National Sustainable Mobility Association, Andemos, in June 2021 alone 2,156 electric and hybrid vehicles were registered, which meant a growth of 468% compared to June 2020.
Previously, they had already reported that between January and April 2021 they had registered 3,651 units of electric and hybrid cars, representing a 248.7% increase in demand compared to 2020.
In the same sense, there are electric and hybrid vehicles that, according to sales figures in Colombia, generate more interest among drivers.

According to the same company, this important growth is due to the greater supply of these vehicles, but also to the greater knowledge of consumers about the benefits it offers to the environment and in saving operations.
Benefits of electric vehicles
It’s economic. Although the price of an electric vehicle is high, compared to that of a conventional car, in the long term it tends to be cheaper for two reasons: the cost of electricity for its operation, which is much lower than the traditional one, and the Savings in maintenance, since the electric motor has fewer components than the combustion engine.
Take care of the environment. Colombia is one of the countries that is part of the 2015 Paris Agreement where it has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 by 51%. For example, Bogotá is one of the cities that is at the forefront of electric public mobility in the world, outside of China, the city has 1,485 electric buses of which 483 are already in operation.
In this way, Carmen Ligia Valderrama, Deputy Minister of Transportation of Colombia, stated during her speech at the Sustainable Mobility panel that, “there are already almost 4,700 electric vehicles registered in the Runt, with more than 4 loading yards, which brings them closer to meet the goal of having 6,600 registered by 2022, this as Mars of the macro-project of 600,000 by 2030”.
