Shock in Romania for the death of Catalin Stefanescu, an icon of bodybuilding in that country, who was found dead during a fishing trip. The police are investigating what happened while analyzing several hypotheses about the death of the 30-year-old.
The Romanian, who won the National Fitness and Bodybuilding Championship in the 80 kilograms category, worked as a fitness trainer in a local gym and this weekend had gone to enjoy a fishing trip with a friend near the town of Lazuri. But, on Sunday he was found lifeless, floating on the water.
“Police were alerted by a lake manager about the fact that a person has died. After going to the scene, police found that a 30-year-old man, while fishing in a lake in Lazuri, was found drowned. The police are conducting investigations, to establish exactly all the circumstances of the occurrence of the event,” said the Dambovita Province Police.
Although at the beginning the version of drowning was quickly established, one fact has puzzled the investigators. The area where he was found is no more than one meter deep, so the agents find it hard to believe that he was overcome by water. An autopsy will now be carried out to determine whether he had a heart problem.
According to the local press, the man, who had a wife and a three-year-old daughter, was alone at the time of the accident, as his friend was not with him at the time. It was precisely this other person who found him lifeless and alerted the locals to call an ambulance. Doctors arrived at the scene only to confirm his death.
Stefanescu, a champion in his country and in 2020 a member of the team that represented Romania at the Balkan Championships, has aroused a feeling of grief in his colleagues. “We cannot express in words what we feel, especially his family. Today is a sad day for everyone, words have no place anymore…. I make this post palatable for all those who knew Catalin and also for those who want to help his family in these difficult moments and offer a little financial help, we will collect everything in our living room, where Catalin was with us day by day…. I am deeply sorry for everything, goodbye colleague, champion!”, wrote Lulian Nedelcu.
On his social media profile, someone with access to him wrote “Thank you so much for being with us”, and the post added more than 170 messages in the last hours, all of them lamenting his sudden death.
