A few hours before the end of the registration period to compete for the presidency of the National Electoral Institute (INE), the adviser of the said body, Carla Humphrey, went this Thursday afternoon to the Chamber of Deputies to register as an aspirant.

This was reported by staff located in Protocol Room C, as well as three MPs from different parties on the LatinUs portal. However, they assured that Humphrey showed up without documents, for which they explained that he still had twelve hours to send them online.

It is worth mentioning that a few hours earlier she had mentioned in an interview for Milenio TV that she maintained her “valid aspiration” to compete to be the first woman to chair the INE, but is weighing the legal implications.

And it is that the Constitution indicates that the positions of directors are for a period of nine years without the possibility of re-election. Even before that, Councilwoman Dania Ravel also told the same outlet that she wouldn’t run because it would be unconstitutional, something Humphrey disagreed with:

“That’s a matter of legal interpretation that hasn’t been resolved either and well, I respect your views and precisely I’ll assess (…) I think that’s a valid aspiration of the one of the people who make up a collegiate body like this, especially from the National Electoral Institute, the power to aspire to the presidency”

In this regard, the legislators consulted by Latinus assured that in recent days the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) received the counselor, as well as her husband, Santiago Nieto, former head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (CRF) and current lawyer. in the state of Hidalgo.

Applicants must go through the filter of the seven-member technical evaluation committee, who are mostly close to the so-called “Fourth Transformation” (4T) government.

Carla Humphrey was elected as an Electoral Advisor in July 2020, so her term is expected to end in 2029.
