MEXICO CITY (AP) — Camila Giorgi beat Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-2 on Sunday to become the first Mérida Open champion.

The Italian, who ranks 140th in the WTA rankings, ended an 18-month streak without winning a tournament and added the fourth title of her career.

He had already won in Montreal (2021) and previously in Linz (2018) and Hertogenbosch (2015).

The Italian hadn’t beaten a top-100 player since last year’s US Open, but en route to the final in Mérida she beat Sloane Stephens (41) and Katerina Siniakova (47).

The tournament takes place on the hard courts of the Country Club of Mérida, in southeastern Mexico, and distributes a purse of 250,000 dollars.
