Brussels, 14 Feb. The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, urged on Tuesday to continue to support Ukraine because there is “no sign” that Russia will stop military aggression against the former Soviet republic.

“Unfortunately there is no indication that Russia wants to stop the war, so we must continue to support Ukraine, and we will all do it together,” said the Spanish politician.

Borrell spoke in this regard on his arrival at a new meeting of the contact group to support Ukraine chaired by the United States and which is meeting today in Brussels.

The head of community diplomacy stressed that Russia continues to attack “all kinds of civil infrastructure” and that it causes “many victims”.

“We will coordinate how we continue to support Ukraine, because the war continues. Everyone will present their proposals and I am sure that among all of us, we will continue to give strong military support to Ukraine to face the crisis. aggression,” he added. he commented and called the Russian invasion “brutal”.

Asked about his position on sending fighter planes to Ukraine so that this country can defend itself against Russian attacks, Borrell limited himself to answering with the expression “we will see”.

Asked about the Estonian proposal that the European Union would jointly buy ammunition for Ukraine, the High Representative said that with the European Peace Support Fund, funding was provided to member states “to buy”.

“I think the European Peace Support Fund could perfectly mobilize resources in a more common way. Now we work country by country; I don’t see any problem with the European Peace Support Fund, which is an intergovernmental fund , it’s not a European Union budget. You can’t buy lethal weapons with the European Union budget,” he said.

He stressed that this intergovernmental fund can be used “in the way we deem most appropriate” and indicated that he will present “proposals” at the meeting of European Union foreign ministers next Monday.

The European Peace Support Fund has made it possible to finance part of the armaments that the Member States concede to Ukraine.

After Moldova’s President Maia Sandu on Monday accused Russia of planning a coup with the help of citizens of Belarus, Serbia and Montenegro, Borrell said the Twenty-Seven know “how far point” Chisinau “is under Russian pressure”.

He added that the next meeting of the European Political Community, in Moldova on June 1, “will be a good opportunity for the whole world to show its support for Moldova to face the Russian pressure, which is stronger every day”. . EFE
