Police in the Australian city of Melbourne were investigating the death of a man who was reportedly killed by a bomb vest he was wearing while driving down the street.

The vest appeared to have exploded when the car hit a speed bump in the suburb of Hallam on Saturday morning, according to Seven News.

Images from a security camera showed the flash of the explosion reaching the roof of the car and from the driver’s window. The bump was not visible in the video.

The car drove a few hundred meters (yards) before hitting a parked vehicle.

A 43-year-old man was found dead in the vehicle, according to police, who did not release his name.

Members of the Bomb Response Unit intervened to neutralize the explosives in the car, according to police. The circumstances of the death were being investigated, but the authorities did not consider the deceased to be the victim of a crime.

Police did not say where the man was headed. He had visited the home of a former partner immediately before her death, Seven said.

Neighbors said police had spent nearly 24 hours at the scene, according to Seven.

“I heard a loud, big noise at 11am and I looked out my window at my house and I saw a car that had gone through the roundabout and hadn’t braked or anything like that and had crashed,” Ben Augel told Seven.

On a brick wall near the site, someone had written graffiti that read “Dad my soldier forever,” next to a heart.
