A team from the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia was intercepted by four armed people who took the vehicle and left the personnel unharmed, the international organization denounced on Monday.

The events took place on February 17 as they traveled along the road that leads from the municipality of El Carmen to Ocaña, in the convulsed region of Catatumbo, on the border with Venezuela and where various armed groups operate, fighting for control of illegal economies.

The UN said in a statement that the gunmen did not identify themselves and ordered Mission personnel to take the vehicle to an unknown location. The UN team arrived at their destination in Ocaña.

The UN assured that the Colombian authorities are investigating and called for respect for the work carried out by organizations that “work for the construction of peace in Colombia”.

A similar incident occurred in January 2022 when a Verification Mission team was intercepted by the armed forces in Guaviare, in the south of the country, who incinerated two of the vehicles they were traveling in.
