At least 5 people were killed in a clash in Oaxaca (Twitter @Betillocruz)

On the afternoon of February 14, a clash between armed civilians in the center of Santiago Amoltepec, Oaxaca. Previously, it was indicated that the balance is at least 5 dead and another injured with a gun.

The episode of violence was confirmed by the governor Solomon Jara Crossstate governor, who said he sent the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO) an application to open a search folder. The official also said that the State Secretariat for Public Security will monitor the municipality where the events occurred.

“I regret the violent events that took place in Santiago Amoltepec. I ask @FISCALIA_GobOax to open the corresponding investigation and I instruct the @SSPC_GobOax to implement a protection and surveillance operation to safeguard order and peace in this municipality of Sierra Sur.”

Local media reported that the victims were assassinated in front of the Municipal Palace of Santiago Amoltepec, in the district of Sol de Vega. It was probably an ambush that occurred around 3:20 p.m., during which heavily armed individuals killed at least five people near the vehicle they were getting out of.

It was unofficially reported that among those killed were the children of Abel García, former municipal president, and two bodyguards.

On February 4, a family was killed by an armed commando in San Miguel Soyaltepec. The four victims of the attack were sleeping at home when they were killed.

The FGEO indicated that they were murdered three men and one woman. It turned out to be a 52-year-old man and his children: two men aged 24 and 29 and a 25-year-old woman.

The homicide occurred in the early hours of the day in the town of Presa Miguel Alemán. The armed individuals arrived in two trucks, got out of the vehicles and entered directly into the house where the victims were sleeping.

On the other hand, in January of this year Councilman Heidi Candelaria was executed in San Pedro Tapanatepec. On the 29th of this month, the woman, who was affiliated with the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), was with a teenager of about 14 years old – presumably her son – in the Barrio de las Flores.

According to documents from the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), disclosed by the Guacayama group, the main organized criminal groups operating in the state of Oaxaca are the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), local cells derived from Los Zetas and a faction of Caro Quintero.

Among the criminal gangs that were part of Los Zetas and are currently present in the entity are Los Oaxaqueños, Los Coyunda, Los Terán and Los Chehuis. While on Caro Quintero’s side, there is a record of a local group known as Los Yglesias, who allegedly established the alliance in 2019.
