MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Dolphins have selected quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Friday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins have not officially announced the deal.

Tagovailoa, who was Miami’s fifth pick in the 2020 draft, will enter the fourth year of his rookie contract this season and is guaranteed to earn $23.2 million.

The Dolphins have already informed the player of their decision.

Tagovailoa set career highs for passing touchdowns, yards thrown and passer ratings in a 2022 season in which he suffered a pair of concussions.

He led the Dolphins 9-8 to second place in the AFC East and their first playoff spot since 2016. Miami lost to Buffalo in the Wildcards game.

As the Dolphins enter the offseason, general manager Chris Grier and coach Mike McDaniel remain consistent in their support for Tagovailoa, despite skepticism about his durability.

Tagovailoa missed a pair of games in 2021, including the postseason duel with two concussions, one of which briefly knocked him out in a September game against Cincinnati.

Despite all of this, the decision to take the fifth-year option underscores the team’s commitment to Tagovailoa and that they have no interest in exploring the open quarterback market, which will include Lamar Jackson.

Grier said his quarterback’s injury history wouldn’t deter them from signing him long-term.
