The government of Mexico ordered to revoke permits and not grant new authorizations dissemination in the environment of genetically modified corn seeds, according to an order published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF) in the afternoon of this Monday, February 13. The action came amid a dispute with the United States over trade in the said product.

According to the information available, the decree orders the biosafety authorities revoke and deny grant permissions for the use of genetically modified maize grains intended for human consumption.

The document, which replaces a controversial decree from late 2020, also establishes replace existing permissions permits for the import, production, distribution and use of the herbicide glyphosate and that new permits be refused.

The new decree, signed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), will enter into force next Tuesday, the 14th, after its publication in the Official Gazette, which established that the The National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt) will coordinate scientific research to get the use of glyphosate phased out.
