After the presentation of the reportRadiography of Plan B: the electoral reform of 2023 under examinationby the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), President López Obrador disqualified the analysis which points, among other things, to the approval of the new electoral law as a “historical setback”.

Besides, blamed on the institution not having manifested itself during the laws and reforms of the previous six years: “They are the same. I think that’s where Lorenzo Córdova comes from and maybe now that he’s finished there he’ll go to work at UNAM. I’m sorry for what they did to UNAMbut it’s the same, they’re academy mafias,” he said during his usual morning lecture on March 3.

The publication is a technical opinion of the Legal Research Institute and it comes within the framework of the recent entry into force of the new regulations in electoral matters (reform of five secondary laws and promulgation of a new one). The president directly questioned the actions of the agency, complaining about his lack of protest when in “the neoliberal period, they changed the whole Constitution (…) in order to plunder the country”.

“How surprising it may be that they talk about the impact of the electoral process”

The controversial electoral reform was published at the dawn of the March 2 in the Official Journal of the Federation its validity has therefore been implemented. With this, one of the first consequences resulted in the automatic shutdown of Edmond James as Executive Secretary of the National Electoral Institute (INE). A fact that AMLO took the opportunity to mock before the reproaches of Lorenzo Córdova Vianello.

One more hour during his presentation to the media, and at the express question of one of the journalists, the president assured in an ironic tone that the non-compliance of the now former civil servant responds to his interest in keeping his post and his privileges. for life: “A the best wants to have a job for life. You forget that we are in a republic, it is not a monarchy”.

This is in reference to the trajectory that the electoral arbiter combined with the leadership of the organization, which he reached in 2008 when the INE was still called the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE). Later, on April 11, 2014 He was elected for six more years in the same position with the renewed Institute and under the command of the current President Counsellor, Lawrence Cordoba. In other words, if the reform of AMLO had not been approved, Jacobo Molina would have remained until the 2026 and with it added 18 years as Executive Secretary of INE.

On February 26, the second edition of the march in defense of the National Electoral Institute (INE) took place: for Mexico City (CDMX), the demonstrators gathered in the Zócalo of the capital; this, it must be remembered, without formalizing any kind of tour before arriving at the Plaza de la Constitución.

Overall, the AMLO Plan B (was approved by Congress in two parts) amends five laws: the general law on social communication, the general law on administrative responsibilities, the general law on electoral institutions and procedures, the general law on political parties, the organic law on the judicial power of the Federation, as well as the publication of the general law on means of contestation in electoral matters.
