A forest fire was recorded on February 20 on the slopes of the Orizaba Peak, exactly in Atzitzintla, Puebla. Which was already repressed but remained active for at least thirty hours, the brigades therefore continue to work until their total extinction. According to initial reports from Civil protection, the flames destroyed 200 hectares from the Pico de Orizaba Protected Natural Area.

There Secretary of the Environment in Puebla, Beatriz Manrique, posted details on her Twitter account of how members of the brigade worked to put out the fire. “This fire is being dealt with on two fronts and represents the most critical incident to date in what will be a very dry season, in particular due to the topographical conditions which make it difficult to access and supply the brigades with fire fighting equipment. fight,” the headline read.

According to information published by the Governor of Puebla, Sergio Solomon Cespedes, through their social networks, at 2:16 p.m. on the 22nd of the same Wednesday, 70% control of the fire was achieved in the affected area. In the work of controlling the flames, 188 members of the Puebla Environmental Brigade, Conafor, CONANP, the Secretary of National Defense, the Municipality of Atzitzintla, the Esperanza Fire Department and volunteers from the region participated.

Among the tasks were actions of fire breaks and widening lines. So far, no one has been reported injured or threatened by the wildfire.

For its part, the Ministry of the Environment urged the population to exercise caution when visiting forest areas. Well in the last days they happened 14 forest fires in the state of Puebla, ten of which are still burning.

The authorities have not revealed the causes of the fire, it is only known that it started in the lower part of Pico de Orizaba and gradually intensified, the wind was a decisive factor for the fire to spread developed.

According to Conafor, the human activities cause 99% forest fires and only the rest is caused by natural phenomena such as electric shocks and the eruption of volcanoes. The average of recent years indicates that almost half of these fires are caused by agricultural and urban activities, as well as the intentional actions and negligence of people who do not properly extinguish their cigarettes or campfires.
