Confirm second case of bird flu in Argentina in wild ducks in Córdoba

The National Food Hygiene and Quality Service (Senasa) confirmed this Saturday the second case of bird flu in two wild ducks found dead, this time in the province of Cordoba.

The detection was confirmed late yesterday after the results of the analysis carried out by the Senasa laboratory became known in samples taken from two dead birds, both positive, in the Las Mojarras Lagoon in the department of Córdoba of General San Martín.

Senasa agents arrived at the site based on a notification received yesterday by the Environmental Police of Cordoba and took the samples which were sent for analysis and diagnosis to the organization’s laboratory in Martínez, province from Buenos Aires. Senasa reported that coordinated work continues with other public entities – national, provincial and municipal and the private sector – to determine possible migration routes in Argentina as well as those that may be linked to the case of wild birds detected in Uruguay.

Within the framework of its resolution 147 which established the health emergency due to the presence of wild geese in the lagoon of Pozuelos, in the province of Jujuy, Senasa coordinates these surveillance actions with the administration of national parks, the ministries national environment and sustainable development. Development, Health and Safety and Wildlife Department.

These measures include border controls, communication actions and surveillance sweeping of backyard birds that are found near the settlement sites of migratory birds. Thus, as part of the surveillance actions, so far, 67 samples of birds found dead have been sent for analysis to the Senasa laboratory, of which two have appeared positive: one in Jujuy and another in Córdoba.

natural host

Wild birds, mainly migratory, are the natural host of the virus (mainly ducks and geese) and are the main factor in its spread across the continent. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is a disease that has a strong impact on both wild bird diversity and poultry production, as it causes very high mortality rates.

Although it is not possible to stop or mitigate the spread of the disease in areas where migratory birds settle, it is possible to adopt preparedness measures and mitigate its spread and impact. negative impact on poultry farming, thanks to early detection, immediate attention to contain its spread to other birds in the interior of the country and the permanent reinforcement of biosecurity measures in commercial farms.

It should be noted that the AI virus is not transmitted to humans by eating meat and eggs. It is transmitted only by direct contact by handling birds sick or dead from the virus.

notification

Senasa also urges the production sector to strengthen the management, hygiene and biosecurity measures of its poultry farms and to notify it immediately of any detection of nervous, digestive or respiratory clinical signs, reduced egg production, water or feed consumption and high mortality in domestic farms. or wild birds. While remembering to take all preventive measures and not to handle the birds when these clinical pictures are detected.

In the event of observation of the presence or suspicion of clinical signs compatible with HPAI in birds or discovery of dead domestic and/or wild birds, notify Senasa by going to one of its offices; through the “Senasa Notifications” application, by sending an email to [email protected]; by entering the “Notify Senasa” section of the agency’s website or by sending a WhatsApp to 11-5700-5704.

“We have migration routes from the north of our continent. It had already been confirmed in Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Uruguay. This sample sent on Monday and which tested positive yesterday is the third to arrive. The other two were negative. The virus does not enter the body through the consumption of birds.
