This was reported by Copeco authorities about the earthquake that was reported this Thursday afternoon south of Amapala

The Permanent Commission for Contingencies (Copeco) reported on Thursday (02.17.2022) that a 5.2 megawatt earthquake was recorded 80 kilometers south of Amapala Island.

According to preliminary information reported by the authorities on their official social networks, the incident had a depth of 68 kilometers and occurred at approximately 6:00 in the afternoon.

“The subduction of the Cocos plate with the Caribbean plate has caused this interplate earthquake on the southern coast of the territory,” explained Copeco.

So far no structural damage has been reported at the site or surrounding areas. Nor were they injured or killed by the natural phenomenon.
