Digital technology has made it easier than ever to take more photos and distribute them in an instant, forcing the media to be even more selective about what gets published. Ukrainian photographers can take as many photos in a week as they would in a whole year of another war in Europe, that of Bosnia.

Some photos are rejected because the composition is wrong or the focus is out of focus. But many powerful images never reach the public simply because, under constant pressure of deadlines, another was chosen instead.

This is a selection of images that were not published by The Associated Press when taken. Months later, the photographers have reviewed their work and picked which ones they think are worth seeing.
