Qualcomm introduced its new flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, just yesterday. It does not only provide more computing power, but also gives a boost in the AI field. Xiaomi has now introduced the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro smartphones, which are based on the new chip, at least for the Chinese market.

The Xiaomi 14 uses a 6.36-inch (approx. 16 cm) display with OLED technology (LTPO, 460 ppi). It can display 12-bit colors and has a variable refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz. Protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, the display has a peak brightness of 3000 nits.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which was manufactured in a 4 nm process, is used under the hood. It is supported by 8 GB of working memory (LPDDR5x) and 256 GB of storage (UFS 4.0). In terms of connectivity, WiFi 7, NFC and Bluetooth 5.4 are available. Xiaomi uses Android 14 with the new HyperOS as the operating system. The focus is on the entire Xiaomi ecosystem. Thus, the HyperConnect framework is used for fast connections to these devices.

The new Xiaomi smartphone features a triple camera setup: 50-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilization and a new Light Fusion 900 image sensor. The ultra-wide-angle lens (Samsung JN1) also has 50 megapixels, and the telephoto lens is again equipped with the JN1’s 50-megapixel sensor. On the front, photos are taken with 32 megapixels.

The battery of the 193 and 188 gram device (glass and leather, respectively) is specified with a capacity of 4610 mAh. Charging is either wired (USB 3.2) with 90 watts or wireless with up to 50 watts. A fingerprint scanner is located under the display. The price is about 520 Euros (~$520). It is available in four different colors – Jade Green, Black, White and Snow Mountain Pink.

The display of the Pro model is a bit bigger at 6.73 inches (approx. 17 cm). Protected by Xiaomi Ceramic Glass, it is supposed to be more scratch-resistant and better protected against drops. There is also an LTPO panel with up to 120 Hz as well as 3000 nits peak brightness (522 ppi). The display is curved on all four corners and sides. The big brother is optionally available with a Titanium bezel (230 grams).

The chipset is identical; the new Qualcomm SoC is also available. The camera setup is also identical (at least on the sensor side). Differences are more likely to be found in the details. The Xiaomi 14 Pro uses a variable aperture from f/1.42 to f/4.0 and adjusts it automatically depending on the ambient light. In addition to different exposure, this also allows a controllable depth of field via the bokeh effect.

Furthermore, the Pro model has 12 GB of working memory (LPDDR5x) and the 4880 mAh battery is even charged with 120 watts via cable. Converted, the Xiaomi 14 Pro (12 GB & 256 GB) costs about 650 Euros. It is also available with 512 GB on the Chinese market.

It is and remains open if and when the two flagship smartphones will also be available on the domestic market. I assume so. So far, Xiaomi has always launched the European devices separately and a few weeks later.
