Intel is one of the big names in electronics, and more specifically in chip manufacturing. That being said, the recent separation initiated by Apple puts the company in a pretty awkward position.
There are a few big names in the electronics industry. Among these, there is of course Intel, the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturer by revenue. Still, its situation has quite recently lost its splendor when Apple initiated its projects to design and produce its chips itself. Intel must react now.
Intel would like to produce Apple Silicon chips
Some of you may have heard that Intel launched a marketing campaign a few days ago to undermine the Apple M1 chip over PCs with Intel processors. This is not very surprising, Intel having something to feel bad about following the end of the collaboration initiated by Apple precisely concerning the chips of its machines.
As part of its future “Intel Foundry Services” plan
Still, and for once, it’s a surprise, it seems that Intel hopes to be able to work very quickly with the Cupertino company. Indeed, during an Intel Unleashed, the CEO of Intel, Pat Gelsinger, shared some ideas for the future of the company, and among them, the “Intel Foundry Services”.
This would be where Intel makes processors and other chips for other companies, something TSMC has long done, for example.
The CEO then explained that one of the projects would be to have Apple as a customer. The American founder could therefore help Apple to manufacture its Apple Silicon chips for future Macs.
For now, Apple relies only on TSMC, or almost, for its manufacturing needs, and this while it needs the entire A range, for its iPhones and iPads, and the M series, for its Mac.
Apple has a habit of using different suppliers to avoid hiccups in the supply chain, so it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that the Cupertino company is looking for additional manufacturers. Would Intel be there? The future will tell.
