An App Store for ChatGPT and company? OpenAI already has such a store in mind.

That App Store would be a platform specifically focused on the acquisition of software that anchors OpenAI’s GPT model.

ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) tools could soon be housed in an ad hoc app store. OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, would have an App Store in the oven where AI applications built on the technology developed by Sam Altman’s company would be sold, according to The Information.

OpenAI Explores Launching Its Own App Store to Expand GPT-based Software Marketplace

It seems that this “marketplace” would be a platform especially focused on the acquisition of software anchored on OpenAI’s GPT model.

Although not many details about this project have emerged, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, reportedly met with developers about a month ago to talk about the eventual creation of an App Store.

By relying on its own app store, OpenAI would strengthen its position in the market and provide its own ecosystem for its customers to interact with each other.

OpenAI’s move could make partners like Microsoft and Salesforce uncomfortable.

Companies such as Aquant, which has embedded ChatGPT in an application focused on customer service, and Khan Academy, the parent of Khanmigo, a GPT-4-based tool that acts as a tutor and teacher’s assistant, would be interested in being present in OpenAI’s planned app store. Both Aquant and Khan Academy are keen to market their technology on OpenAI’s App Store.

This “marketplace” would definitely be a boost for OpenAI, which a few months ago launched an API with the ultimate goal of allowing developers to integrate the GPT-3.5-Turbo model into any app or service.

OpenAI Plans to Launch its Own App Store, Expanding Revenue Opportunities and Market Presence

With its own App Store, OpenAI would consolidate its position in the market and would pocket a higher percentage of the profits from the applications born in the heat of its technology. Microsoft and Salesforce already have app stores in which they market GPT-based apps (of which OpenAI of course takes a percentage). However, with its own App Store, the revenues of the company headed by Sam Altman would undoubtedly spread its wings.

However, the OpenAI App Store is still a preliminary project and it is not clear when it will be launched, especially as its launch could create tensions with Salerforce and Microsoft by cutting ties with the intermediaries.
