Madrid- The Spanish teams, male and female, will meet their rivals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games next Tuesday, February 2 after the draw that will take place at the Patrick Baumann de Mies Basketball House, Switzerland.
In the female category, the 12 teams that will participate are already classified: Nigeria (Africa), Canada, Puerto Rico, USA (America) China, Japan (host) and Korea (Asia), Belgium, France, Serbia, Spain (Europe ) and Australia (Oceania).
Each team will be assigned to four pots according to the FIBA women’s world ranking, with Spain as the top seed, and 3 groups of 4 teams each will be formed. There can be a maximum of one group with two European teams and no more than one team from other continents in the same group.
Regarding the men’s category, there are eight qualified teams: Nigeria (Africa), Argentina, USA (America), Iran and Japan (host) (Asia), France, Spain (Europe) and Australia (Oceania) .
The remaining 4 will be awarded to the four teams that win the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournaments scheduled from June 29 to July 4, 2021, in Victoria (Canada); Split (Croatia); Kaunas (Lithuania); and Belgrade (Serbia).
Like the women’s team, Spain in the men’s category will be seeded and 3 groups of 4 teams each will be formed.
There can be a maximum of two European teams in the same group and no more than one team from other continents in the same group.
