The native of Guadalajara will race for the sixth time on the Mexican circuit , in which his best position has been two seventh places achieved in 2017 and 2019.
In 2021, Pérez arrives in Mexico in fourth place of the season with 150 points, 137.5 points behind the leader, his Red Bull teammate , the Dutchman Max Verstappen.
Verstappen maintains a fight to be the new champion of Formula 1 with the current monarch, the British Lewis Hamilton , of Mercedes, at the close of the calendar.
“Being ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen in Sunday’s race is a problem that I would like to have, but the decision (on whether to let the Dutchman pass) will be made in the race . We haven’t talked about that yet, ”he said.
The 31-year-old driver revealed that for Red Bull, the Mexican Grand Prix is one of the most important dates on the calendar.
“Everyone is excited, it is a special place for us. We’ll see what happens over the course of the race, but I’m sure everyone in the team wants me to win, ” Perez stressed at the insistence of the reporters to find out if it would help Verstappen to remain leader in the drivers’ championship.
If he wins in Mexico, ‘Checo’ would add the third victory in his career that began in 2011. Before he conquered Sakhir, in 2020 with Racing Point , and Azerbaijan, in 2021 with Red Bull .
“ I feel at home , both with the team and with the car and I hope to have a great qualifying on Saturday. Passing here is tricky because we put a lot of demand on the brakes and the engine. It is a complicated race if you are not up to the start at the start ”, he concluded.
